Frequently Asked Questions
What are the requirements for touch?
Touch requires one or more touch enabled toys in Second Life, an active touch subscription, and the touch application,
which currently runs under Windows XP or Windows Vista. A mac version is on the way shortly.
How does touch work?
Touch syncs up your real life toy with a virtual toy, so that when the virtual toy begins vibrating, so does
the real toy. This may include various controls such as a pattern of vibrations, strength of the vibrations, etc.
What's the deal with the subscription?
Touch utilizes dedicated external server(s) to communicate with your real life toy, thus there is an ongoing cost to us to
make the magic work. We pass a portion of this cost onto the customers that use the service (and we soak up the rest). The cost
is actually very minimal, less than one U.S dollar a month.
What Xcite! toys in Second Life are compatible with touch?
You can check out this list on our website or look for the
touch icon on the toys in our stores.
What real life toys are compatible with touch?
Touch is currently compatible with the trance vibrator series. Other vibrators may be added to the list as they become available (there aren't a lot of
vibrators that can be driven through USB at this time). Using the "DRMN Trance" system (available here),
you can plug in just about any commercially available vibrating device with a 2.5mm phono plug. This means that while you need to get the adaptor, you can plug a wide
variety of different toys with it. You can also check ebay for the more traditional trance vibrators, but they are not nearly as much fun since you can't plug a variety of toys into them.
Why trance?
Because it's the only non-proprietary solution out there. All other vibrator manufacturers seem to be developing for their own systems, which means they're pricey and
not open to 3rd party solutions such as Second Life. You can get a full trace setup for $30 and hook up to four of them on at once. You can also plug in just about
any vibrator with a standard plug size into it, which means a huge variety of toys can be used once you have the USB converter. It's the best solution out there right now
for our customers, but you can be sure we'll keep looking for other vibrator manufacturers that support open protocols and reasonable prices.
Can I use more than one vibrator?
Absolutely. For the first time, you can plug in up to four different vibrators into your computer (depending how many USB slots you have free), and they all can be driven
independantly by different toys in Second Life.
Ok, if I buy a vibrator, how do I turn it on using Second Life?
Simple. You buy an Xcite! toy that is compatible with touch, and use the menus to turn the touch function on. Assuming you have an active touch account (they can be purchased
at any Xcite! store), you would run the touch application (available for free on our website) and then whenever the toy in Second Life is activated, your real life vibrator will
imitate whatever happens to the toy in Second Life.
Is this compatible with the remote toys?
Yes, in fact the remote toys are uniquely suited to touch, since they allow you to switch the power of the vibrations and the pattern using the HUD. It also means
one or more people can control your in-world and real life toy from anywhere on the grid.
What about uptime and reliability?
We can make no promises about uptime, given the unreliable nature of the Internet and especially Second Life. If Second Life goes down or has problems, the toys may not
work. If your connection goes down, it will not work. If the dedicated server has issues, it will not work. Having said that, our servers are hosted on a very reliable
Tier 1 internet provider, and Second Life seems to be relatively stable lately, so chances are you're not going to experience a whole lot of times when touch is not operating.
Is touch safe? Can people find out who I am?
Touch is very safe. The application was written by us. The server is ours. All communications are encrypted at every level. There's no way your identity can be discovered
through this system.
